This 3-hour course focuses on the use of massage to address common bodily tension and pain that many women experience during pregnancy. Topics include the significance of each trimester as it relates to the changes commonly found in the musculoskeletal system; the location of pertinent bony landmarks, muscles and ligaments; the contraindications and benefits of prenatal massage; and the importance of creating a safe, respectful, supportive and nurturing environment for the client. Also discussed are assessment methods and effective treatment planning to address common pain patterns. Demonstration includes a review of proper draping in supine, prone and side-lying positions and prenatal massage techniques that are safe and appropriate to address pain and tension at the joints and major muscle groups of the back, pelvis, legs, feet, shoulders, and abdomen. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.

This 3-hour course explores massage techniques to relieve pain and tension in the foot and lower extremities. Topics include a brief review of kinesiology, including the dynamic relationship between the foot, ankle, knee and hip; common areas of tension and muscles that tend to be overlooked, such as Tibialis Posterior and the deeper areas of the arch; acupressure points involved in foot and lower extremity pain and their associated contraindications; and gentle and deep-tissue techniques to facilitate increased function. Also discussed are assessment methods and effective treatment planning to address foot and lower extremity pain. The demonstration includes carefully facilitated stretches that respect clients’ pain threshold as one possible assessment method; addressing key acupressure points; and adapted-Shiatsu palming, vibration, friction, and connective tissue therapy. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.

This 3-hour course focuses on massage techniques for the lower leg, specifically, the muscles of the calf and shin. Students learn multiple manual techniques that target these parts of the anatomy, and how to incorporate the techniques into massage sessions. Instruction includes: a review of major bones and muscles, injuries, pathologies, and lifestyle factors affecting the area. Also explored are indications and contraindications, as well as populations likely to benefit from lower leg massage. Demonstration of Swedish, Neuromuscular Therapy and Sports Massage techniques to address the calf and shin are then followed by supervised hands-on practice.

In this 3-hour course, students learn how to skillfully explain and incorporate a sequence of abdominal massage techniques into their work with clients. Topics include cautions, contraindications, boundaries, secure draping techniques, an abdominal massage protocol, and strategies for confidently introducing and discussing this type of massage. Also discussed is effective treatment planning based on assessment. Demonstration includes a sequence of abdominal massage integrated into a massage session, including how to introduce and normalize working with this vulnerable area of the body. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.

This 3-hour course focuses on the ways that reflexology can be used to complement the effectiveness of other bodywork modalities. Topics include a brief history of this discipline; a review of the reflexology foot map including the 4 horizontal lines and 10 vertical zones; and common contraindications. Reflexology-based assessment methods and effective treatment planning are reviewed, and demonstration includes common foot reflexology techniques to address specific anatomical areas and bodily systems. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.

Students learn how to use multiple manual techniques to achieve deep pressure, how to adjust these techniques to avoid fatigue, how to gauge depth based on palpation and communication, and how to help clients relax into deep work. The relationship between the therapist's and client's experience of pressure is explored by using different parts of the hand and forearm to scale pressure up or down. Adjusting table height to assist with deep pressure is also reviewed. Demonstration of Swedish, neuromuscular therapy, and sports deep pressure massage techniques are then followed by supervised hands-on practice.
