In this 3-hour course, students learn how to skillfully explain and incorporate a sequence of abdominal massage techniques into their work with clients. Topics include cautions, contraindications, boundaries, secure draping techniques, an abdominal massage protocol, and strategies for confidently introducing and discussing this type of massage. Also discussed is effective treatment planning based on assessment. Demonstration includes a sequence of abdominal massage integrated into a massage session, including how to introduce and normalize working with this vulnerable area of the body. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.

This 3-hour course focuses on massage techniques for the lower leg, specifically, the muscles of the calf and shin. Students learn multiple manual techniques that target these parts of the anatomy, and how to incorporate the techniques into massage sessions. Instruction includes: a review of major bones and muscles, injuries, pathologies, and lifestyle factors affecting the area. Also explored are indications and contraindications, as well as populations likely to benefit from lower leg massage. Demonstration of Swedish, Neuromuscular Therapy and Sports Massage techniques to address the calf and shin are then followed by supervised hands-on practice.

This 3-hour course explores massage techniques to relieve pain and tension in the foot and lower extremities. Topics include a brief review of kinesiology, including the dynamic relationship between the foot, ankle, knee and hip; common areas of tension and muscles that tend to be overlooked, such as Tibialis Posterior and the deeper areas of the arch; acupressure points involved in foot and lower extremity pain and their associated contraindications; and gentle and deep-tissue techniques to facilitate increased function. Also discussed are assessment methods and effective treatment planning to address foot and lower extremity pain. The demonstration includes carefully facilitated stretches that respect clients’ pain threshold as one possible assessment method; addressing key acupressure points; and adapted-Shiatsu palming, vibration, friction, and connective tissue therapy. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.

This 3-hour course focuses on the use of massage to address common bodily tension and pain that many women experience during pregnancy. Topics include the significance of each trimester as it relates to the changes commonly found in the musculoskeletal system; the location of pertinent bony landmarks, muscles and ligaments; the contraindications and benefits of prenatal massage; and the importance of creating a safe, respectful, supportive and nurturing environment for the client. Also discussed are assessment methods and effective treatment planning to address common pain patterns. Demonstration includes a review of proper draping in supine, prone and side-lying positions and prenatal massage techniques that are safe and appropriate to address pain and tension at the joints and major muscle groups of the back, pelvis, legs, feet, shoulders, and abdomen. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.

This 3-hour course targets recurring issues of tension and pain in the hips and low back. Topics include a brief review of the anatomy, kinesiology and physiology of the hips and low back; proper draping; common causes of hip and low back pain; and massage techniques to address tension in the tendons and ligaments of this area. Also discussed are assessment methods and effective treatment planning to address hip and low back pain. Demonstration includes proper draping, palpation as one possible assessment method, and specific massage techniques to increase circulation and stability in the hips and low back. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.

This 4-hour course offers introductory information about essential oils and how to use them to create safe and therapeutically effective products for personal use. Topics include general safety and safety specific to pregnancy; dilution guidelines; the therapeutic properties of the essential oils introduced in class; essential oil quality and methods of extraction; modes of application; and how essential oils are used to support health and stimulate the body’s natural process of self-healing. Demonstration followed by supervised hands-on practice in which participants work with aromatherapy supplies provided to make a product offers hands-on experience that reinforces lecture.

This 3-hour course includes an informed approach to working with the knee. Topics include a brief review of knee anatomy, kinesiology, and physiology. Also discussed are common causes of knee pain, the knee’s specific anatomical structures and their unique interface with the nervous system. Assessment methods and effective treatment planning to address knee pain are also explored. Demonstration includes carefully facilitated knee stretches that respect clients’ pain threshold as one possible assessment method, and massage techniques to increase circulation and stability in the knee. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.

This 3-hour course teaches students how to perform cupping on specific areas of the body for certain pathologies and overall detoxification of the body. Students learn the history and purpose of cupping, the benefits and contraindications; how to use the equipment; light, medium, and deep therapeutic cupping techniques; which techniques to use for specific pathologies, as well as for general health and wellness; how to integrate effective cupping techniques within a massage session or use cupping as a stand-alone treatment. Also discussed is effective treatment planning based on assessment. Demonstration includes equipment set up, integration of light, medium, and deep therapeutic cupping techniques into a massage session, and clean-up/sanitizing guidelines. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.

This 4-hour course reviews shoulder anatomy and introduces techniques to treat the rotator cuff, shoulder girdle, and other supporting structures. Students gain in-depth knowledge of how to best use finger pads, fingertips, knuckles, palms, forearms, elbows, and discover what tools work best for each client. Body mechanics and mindfulness are explored as these things relate to working with the shoulder, promoting therapist comfort and career longevity. There is also an anatomy and physiology review which includes palpation and assessment of the rotator cuff and the musculature of the shoulder girdle. The yin and yang channels integral to the anterior and posterior arm and shoulder are examined, and questions that can further highlight which channels may be involved in pain patterns are discussed. There is a demonstration of supine and prone techniques for working with the shoulder, followed by supervised hands-on practice.

Topics include the muscular connections of the neck to the upper back and shoulders; common causes of neck pain, the muscles involved and perpetuating factors; how to safely work around lateral and anterior neck endangerment sites; acupressure points involved in neck pain; and contraindications for neck work. Also discussed are assessment methods and effective treatment planning to address neck pain. Demonstration includes carefully facilitated neck stretches that respect clients’ pain threshold as one possible assessment method; addressing key acupressure points; and massage techniques to address neck pain including friction, connective tissue therapy, and neuromuscular therapy. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.
