This 4-hour course explores massage techniques to relieve neck pain and tension. Topics include the muscular connections of the neck to the upper back and shoulders; common causes of neck pain, the muscles involved, and perpetuating factors; how to safely work around lateral and anterior neck endangerment sites; acupressure points involved in neck pain; and contraindications for neck work. Also discussed are assessment methods and effective treatment planning to address neck pain. Demonstration includes carefully facilitated neck stretches that respect clients’ pain threshold as one possible assessment method; addressing key acupressure points; and massage techniques to address neck pain, including friction, connective tissue therapy, and neuromuscular therapy. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.
