This 3-hour course focuses on the use of massage to address common bodily tension and pain that many women experience during pregnancy. Topics include the significance of each trimester as it relates to the changes commonly found in the musculoskeletal system; the location of pertinent bony landmarks, muscles and ligaments; the contraindications and benefits of prenatal massage; and the importance of creating a safe, respectful, supportive and nurturing environment for the client. Also discussed are assessment methods and effective treatment planning to address common pain patterns. Demonstration includes a review of proper draping in supine, prone and side-lying positions and prenatal massage techniques that are safe and appropriate to address pain and tension at the joints and major muscle groups of the back, pelvis, legs, feet, shoulders, and abdomen. Supervised practice reinforces lecture and practical application of techniques.
